Alongside its conservative traits, the Algarve is also characterized by innovative historical solutions, some spontaneous, others probably due to the Gallo-Romanesque influence of military orders of that origin or the influx of Andalusian Arabic. The strong individuality of Algarve’s dialect situates the understanding of a rich historical background – the terrain’s orography allowed coastal populations to have greater contact with peoples coming from abroad, contrasting with the interior regions, subjected by a prolonged isolation from the rest of the national territory, the mountains serving as a natural frontier. The terms, the traditional sayings, its colorful curses, full of humour and the overall vivacity and rhythm of this particular dialect reflects a land of sun and contrasts, its identity and cultural heritage.

Dicionário do Falar Algarvio by Eduardo Brazão Gonçalves

Although relatively small in size, the Algarve’s linguist range offers a great diversity and multiplicity of terms: the dialect spoken in Sotavento (Eastern Algarve) from Santo António to Faro differs from the Barlavento (Western Algarve) ranging an area that encompasses Faro to Sagres, following specific speech characteristics. Regarding its contextual and circumstantial topics, the dialect follows Arabic marks, archaic Portuguese neologisms and sailors’ vocalization signs, also with features of grammar, pronunciation and intonation, naturally always changing depending on where you are located.

Unfortunately, in recent years, there are factors 163that have contributed to the loss of a large part of the dialect’s phonetic and vocabulary features (e.g. the widespread information in Standard Portuguese by the media and extreme tourism flows, barring the isolation of inland regions that had preserved the dialect). Nevertheless, it is still possible to find “linguistic resistance movements” that continuously show the local and global community a valuable resource of the Portuguese linguist heritage, representing the Algarvian dialect as the perfect example of oral tradition – a dialect that flawlessly encapsulates the way of life of the region.
